Since 2020, Eniware Systems has been dedicated to delivering tailored, long-term IT solutions that meet the highest standards of security and efficiency. As a small, highly specialized IT startup, we create innovative solutions that meet our clients' needs while fostering their technological independence.
In an era where the power of major tech corporations is growing, making companies increasingly dependent, independence fosters transparency, reduces dependencies, and enhances data sovereignty. These principles of open-source approaches are deeply ingrained in our work, as shown by our recent involvement in SPRIND's tender for the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. This project to develop a European digital identity—a digital ID card—demonstrated how well our fundamental philosophy aligns with its requirements. Although we didn’t make it to the final selection, the experience reaffirmed our commitment to technological independence and data sovereignty.
Why Independence Is Becoming Increasingly Important
Why did EUDI choose open-source development? Open-source offers numerous benefits: it fosters transparency, reduces dependencies, and enables continuous development through the community. These aspects are critical for a project like the EUDI Wallet, which must meet the highest security and privacy standards.
Independent development is gaining popularity. Why? The trend is growing because independent approaches offer numerous advantages that are becoming increasingly important in the modern IT world and in the general zeitgeist of our society:
- Independence: No reliance on major software vendors and monopolies. Companies can make their own adjustments and are not dependent on updates or changes from external providers.
- Interoperabilität: Seamless integration with other systems without proprietary restrictions. This is especially important in an increasingly interconnected world where different systems need to communicate with one another.
- Security: Open-source software is continuously reviewed and improved by the community, resulting in higher security. Bugs and vulnerabilities are identified and resolved more quickly.
- Flexibility: Open-source allows code to be adapted to specific needs and to respond quickly to new requirements. This flexibility is highly valuable in today’s fast-paced technological world and the varied individual demands placed on software.
- Cost Efficiency: Using open technologies eliminates high licensing fees and expensive maintenance contracts,making development more cost-effective and allowing for greater customization options.
- Community: Collective intelligence and community contributions drive innovation. At the same time, companies actively contribute to further development and benefit from the knowledge and experiences of others.
Our Projects and Technologies
Our open-source approach forms the foundation of our work. We not only use existing technologies but also further develop and adapt them to our clients’ specific needs. This enables us to deliver tailored, autonomous, and highly customized solutions. One example of our independence is that we host and manage our entire infrastructure ourselves. This not only creates trust and security but also allows us to experience IT in all its areas and interactions. Our extensive technical expertise enables us to implement these approaches effectively and realize innovative projects.
Local Solutions for Data-Sensitive Areas
Another advantage of our approach is the ability to cater to customer-specific requirements. For example, we can avoid cloud services and instead implement local solutions, such as local AI systems. This is particularly valuable for clients in highly data-sensitive areas and allows for greater data sovereignty. However, this topic warrants its own dedicated blog post.
Our Vision
At Eniware Systems, we believe that technological independence and transparent development are the keys to future-proof, secure, and efficient IT solutions. Our commitment to an independent community and our self-hosted infrastructures demonstrate our conviction and our ambition to live IT in all its facets. This increasingly aligns with the zeitgeist of our society. In a press release from early 2024, Germany and France announced greater efforts toward digital sovereignty.
At a time when monopolies are growing stronger and more powerful, creating ever-greater dependencies and increasing opacity, we advocate for openness and independence in digital infrastructure.
Germany is one of the countries with the highest data protection standards. These standards must be upheld—something that IT service monopolists often fail to do. For us, this is not only ideologically important but also essential to meet our clients' demands. These requirements must be implemented and maintained!
